01
Confirm that API 675 is the correct basis
Use the project specification and current purchased edition of the standard. Do not describe a pump as API 675 merely because it is a metering pump. The vendor proposal, datasheet, testing, documentation and stated deviations must be reviewed as a complete package.
- Controlled-volume reciprocating pump duty
- Purchaser's edition and project amendments
- Applicable local, electrical and hazardous-area requirements
- Documented vendor deviations
02
Complete the process datasheet
Specify the liquid at all relevant operating cases, not just a design flow. Include composition, concentration, temperature, density, viscosity, vapour pressure, solids and corrosion concerns. State suction pressure, discharge pressure, required capacity range and control philosophy.
- Rated, normal and minimum capacity
- Maximum differential and allowable working pressure
- Available NPSH and suction transients
- Materials and corrosion allowance
- Manual or automatic capacity control
03
Define package and accessory scope
Clarify whether the scope is a bare pump, baseplate-mounted unit or integrated dosing package. Identify motor, coupling guard, relief valve, pulsation dampener, calibration device, instruments, junction boxes, local controls, painting and preservation requirements.
- Driver and hazardous-area classification
- Baseplate, piping and instrumentation limits
- Relief and back-pressure protection
- Required alarms, transmitters and control signals
- Spares, tools and commissioning support
04
Plan inspection and documentation
Agree the inspection and test plan before manufacture. Identify hold, witness and review points, performance-test requirements, material certificates, welding documentation, calibration records, drawings and final data-book format. Project-specific requirements should be resolved before purchase-order placement.
- Approved datasheet and general arrangement
- Quality plan and inspection notifications
- Performance and hydrostatic testing as applicable
- Material traceability and certificates
- Installation, operation and maintenance documentation
Frequently asked questions
Does API 675 guarantee suitability for every chemical?
No. The standard does not replace application engineering. Chemical compatibility, suction conditions, solids, temperature and system design still require project-specific review.
Which edition should be specified?
Use the edition named by the purchaser or project specification and verify current API publications, addenda and errata before procurement.
